Fawlty Towers was a British sitcom which ran from 1975 to 1979, and was created by and starred John Cleese and Connie Booth. While there were only 12 episodes made, the sitcom has gone down in history as one of the greatest and most popular comedy series of all time. The main character Basil Fawlty, played by John Cleese, was actually based on a real life eccentric hotel owner called Donald Sinclair.

John Cleese had already found huge success in Monty Python, without doubt the biggest and most influential comedy group of all time. However for Fawlty Towers he decided to strike out on his own and try his hand writing his own comedy series. The series is set in the fictional hotel of Fawlty Towers in Torquay, the so-called English Riviera. While Cleese stars as Basil Fawlty, Prunella Scales plays his controlling wife Sybil. Connie Booth plays the chambermaid and Andrew Sachs plays ‘the fall guy’ Manuel, with most of the jokes centred on his poor grasp of English.

Basil is somebody who is desperate to be seen as someone who belongs to the highest social class, and regards most of his guests as being inferior to him. This provides the backbone for most of the comedy in the show, as he inevitably gets into countless arguments and absurd situations with most if not all of his guests. One of the most common examples of this is with foreign guests or anyone who doesn’t speak English as a first language, as this gives Basil the perfect opportunity to prove his superiority. Germans in particular come in for a lot of ridicule, with Basil’s constant references to the War.

Even when Basil has guests of a supposedly higher class, his clueless understanding of how to behave as equal to them provides much hilarity, as he constantly makes a fool of himself. As a result, he often becomes the figure of ridicule amongst the higher class guests that he aspires to be as equal to.

However the character who suffers the most from Basil is Manuel, the waiter. While well-meaning but essentially confused and disorganised, Manuel is grateful for his position in the hotel, but lives in constant fear of Basil’s frequent violent and unpredictable outbursts. As he was more often than not the butt of the jokes, Manuel was one of the most popular characters on the show, as the audience felt sorry for him due to his suffering at the hands of Basil.

As mentioned, there were only ever 12 episodes of Fawlty Towers made, and yet it has gone down in history as an all time classic comedy series. In the year 2000, the British Film Institute declared it as the Best British Television Series of all time. The show has also won numerous BAFTAs, Cleese won Best Entertainment Performance in 1980 and both series won Best Scripted Comedy in 1976 and 1980. The show has been immensely popular all over the world, and has been translated into many different languages.

John Cleese always refused to make a third series, as we was worried that if he did it wouldn’t live up to the standards of the first two series, and strongly believed in ‘quitting while you are ahead’. While there have been strong rumours of a one-off special episode to reflect modern times, this hasn’t quite materialised. However, there has been a critically acclaimed stage play adapted by Cleese, which has been touring the UK and Ireland in 2025 and continues into 2026, and in fact the play was televised on Friday 19th September 2025, 50 years to the day since it was first broadcast on television.

Whether or not the show gets a full reboot or remake however, there is no doubting Fawlty Towers lofty position in the pantheon of British comedy.
